Micronationalism is a vast concept, which has gained increasing importance with the rise of the Internet. It is founded upon the notion that any group of people may declare independence and form their own state and government. Micronations are generally not recognised by larger States – henceforth referred to as “macronations” – but a web of mutual diplomatic recognitions exists between micronations, making it possible to refer to a true micronational community. One of the founding texts of modern micronationalism was the Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace. However, a number of micronations lay claim to actual territory, sometimes on the basis of legal backing; the most famous include the Principality of Sealand, the Principality of Hutt River Province, and the Principality of Minerva. Many others, perhaps dozens, exist as constructs of the mind, expressions of ideals that are implemented in no macronation. Novus Aequalitas , so far, belongs to the latter category.
Micronations should be distinguished from microstates – such as San Marino, Monaco, the Holy See or Nauru – which, while tiny, are recognised by the international community and thus constitute “macronations”. For more information on micronations, you may wish to consult the following documents. The government of Novus Aequalitas does not necessarily endorse their content; they are included here purely on an informative basis:
