A BRIEF HISTORY

The People’s Democratic Republic of Novus Aequalitas was born from the United Democratic Communist Party, a political party of the NationStates General forum.

On May 12 th, 2005 , Adrien Rodd (“Aridd”), the player behind the fictitious nation of Ariddia in the online political simulation game NationStates, by Max Barry, had an idea which was soon to gain momentum in the game’s General forum. He began a thread entitled ‘NS General political parties: start your own party!’. These parties were to bring together people with common political beliefs, to establish policies they would implement had they the opportunity to do so. It provided a hypothetical setting for political debate.

Ten stable political parties emerged, and faced one another off in an election, which had been preceded by discussions within each party to draw up a manifesto and shape a number of policies. The United Democratic Communist Party, the first such party to come into being, attracted the greatest number of new members, and eventually obtained 10.32% of the vote. The Party thus obtained the right to three representatives in the NS General Parliament, whose role is to debate and pass proposals – in a purely hypothetical context, of course.

The UDCP soon had its own forum, courtesy of Amy Gillespie, the player behind the fictitious nation of Glitziness, and Huw Jones, the player behind the fictitious nation of Pure Metal, and an NSwiki article, courtesy of Charles Thompson (New Burmesia).

As various matters were discussed within the Party, Aridd suggested establishing a micronation to represent the ideals and values of the UDCP within the micronational community. The founding of the PDR Novus Aequalitas was the eventual result of that decision.

Novus Aequalitas bases its claim to sovereignty on the principle of micronationalism [what is a micronation]. No two micronations are quite alike, but Novus Aequalitas has, like most others, the full attributes of a sovereign nation, including a flag, a national anthem, a functional government, and diplomatic representatives.

The National Anthem

John Lennon's "Imagine"

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
